Introduction / History

The Usino in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the Madang Province, particularly in the Usino-Bundi district northeast of the Ramu Valley. Their communities are situated in a region of tropical rainforest bordered by mountain ranges, where geography has contributed to the development of distinct local identities over time.

Historically, the Usino were not organized as a single unified political group but consisted of several closely related communities or territories. These groups shared language and cultural ties while maintaining their own local leadership and identity.

They speak the Sob language, also known as Usino, which belongs to the Trans–New Guinea language family within the Rai Coast group. This reflects the deep linguistic diversity of Papua New Guinea, where many small language groups developed in relative isolation.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Usino centers on village communities located in a tropical lowland environment. The surrounding rainforest provides abundant natural resources, and daily life is closely tied to the rhythms of the land and seasons.

Most Usino people depend on subsistence agriculture, growing staple crops and using the forest for additional food sources. Hunting, fishing, and gathering contribute to their diet, while rivers and footpaths serve as important routes for travel and interaction.

Family and kinship relationships are central to social life. Communities are typically organized around extended families, with cooperation playing an essential role in meeting daily needs. As in much of Papua New Guinea, people often speak their local language within the community while also using a wider trade language for broader communication.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Usino are largely identified with Christianity, and the gospel has had a strong presence in their communities. Church life plays an important role in shaping values, relationships, and regular gatherings for worship and teaching. Traditional beliefs related to the spiritual world are still present in certain contexts. Portions of Scripture are available in the Sob language, providing them God's answers to their spiritual needs.

What Are Their Needs?

Equipping local leaders is especially important so they can teach clearly and guide their communities according to biblical truth. Strong leadership can help address areas where traditional beliefs may still influence daily life.

Because many Usino communities are located in remote environments, practical challenges such as limited access to education, transportation, and resources can also affect both daily living and ministry development. Strengthening both spiritual and practical foundations can support long-term growth.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Usino believers will grow in a deep and faithful understanding of God's word and in obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray for local church leaders to be equipped with sound doctrine and strengthened in their ministry.
Pray that families will be built on biblical truth and that younger generations will follow Christ with conviction.
Pray for increased access to scripture and for continued translation work where needed.
Pray that Usino Christians will be sent by the Holy Spirit to Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia.
